Memorial Service
Towards the end of November and
for the members of Bravo Company, Chaplain Gunderson conducted a memorial
service for those killed in action on 19 November. This service was
conducted in the late afternoon on a jungle hilltop and in accordance with
military custom, a pair of combat boots and a steel helmet for each trooper
killed in action was placed in front of those participating in the service.

The conduct of a memorial
service conducted at a firebase followed this sequence:
The name of the trooper
killed in action would be called.
1. The buddy of the
trooper killed in action would march forward when the name of his friend was
called, and drive the bayonet into the ground,
2. The buddy would remove his helmet and place it on the butt of the weapon.
3. The buddy would render hand salute toward the helmet-covered weapon, and step back and march away.
Then the next name would be called and the above steps were repeated.
